This one was a good one. A homeowner in Boerne called us out to look at a deck that most contractors would have told them to tear out and start over. Bare, weathered wood in a lot of spots. Old paint hanging on in others. Boards that had gone gray and dry from years of Texas sun and rain. It was the kind of deck a lot of people give up on.
We took a different approach. Instead of writing it off, we cleaned it, prepped it, and stained it with the same product we put on our own homes — and it came back looking like a completely different deck. Here is a look at the before and after.
Before: Bare, Weathered, and Ready for the Landfill
You can see it in the pictures. The wood looks messed up. Some sections still had failing paint, others were completely bare. On a lot of jobs like this, the homeowner is already halfway convinced they need to replace the whole thing. Replacement is expensive, though — and in a lot of cases, it is not necessary. If the structure is still sound, the surface can almost always be brought back.
Cleaning and Prepping the Wood
The first step is always cleaning. On a deck like this, that means a proper soft wash with the right chemistry to strip the old failed paint, kill off any mildew and algae in the grain, and open the wood up so it can actually accept a new finish. Skip this step or rush it and no product on earth will bond the way it should.
Once the wood was clean, we let it dry out fully, checked for any loose boards or fasteners, and got it ready for stain. Prep is boring but it is where these projects are won or lost.

Preserving What You Already Have

On a lot of decks — even ones that look pretty rough — a proper clean and stain is a fraction of the cost and gets you back to enjoying the space in a couple of days instead of a couple of months.
That does not mean every deck can be saved. If the structure is rotted, unsafe, or fastener-shot, replacement is the right call. But if the bones are still good and the surface just looks tired, do not let anyone talk you into a teardown before you have had it looked at.
